Professor Huang:
China’s development strategy emphasizes rural revitalization,
particularly in Zhejiang Province.
In this economically advanced region,
the needs of rural areas
were suddenly brought to our attention.
That’s why we chose Dazheng Village
as our pilot site
to conduct this practice.
We aimed to stimulate village development
through color innovation,
embarking on this exploration.
In 2019, we focused on
a central road in the village,
implementing creative upgrades.
We transformed both the road surface
and building facades along it,
creating a themed project called
“Colorful Happiness Road.”
When we first visited the village,
we noticed many buildings
with mosaic tile facades.
Due to aging,
these mosaics were often peeling.
We wondered:
Could we find a solution
to this problem?
So we conceived the idea of
using colorful mosaic-inspired designs
to address the peeling and aging walls.
This approach turned a stubborn problem
into a standout feature,
while also ensuring the solution
could be easily replicated
and promoted elsewhere.
Ms. Guo:
The objective of our current initiative is to promote villager participation and revitalize the rural community through approaches like neighborhood sharing, spatial enhancement, and chromatic design.
When extracting color schemes, we focused on three key aspects:
the natural background palette,
architectural base tones,
and cultural accent colors.
Specifically, we drew inspiration from soil, pebbles, vegetation, building exteriors, doors, windows, and other elements.
The street we revitalized is located on the western side of Dazheng Village’s community center. Through on-site color extraction, we developed a customized color palette for Dazheng Village.
Considering the village’s natural mountainous and aquatic surroundings, we selected natural hues from the palette as dominant tones, significantly improving the street’s luminosity and chroma.
The mosaic tile colors represent a signature feature of Ninghai County’s rural architecture. To highlight this regional characteristic, our project strategically adapted these mosaic colors to serve as accent tones in the wall designs.
Our color selection methodology involved:
physical sampling,
categorization,
hand-painted color swatches,
and material comparison –
yielding an authentic and precise collection of vernacular colors.
Professor Huang:
This year’s initiative represents an upgrade compared to previous years.
This upgrade is first reflected in how we’re extending the “Colorful Happiness Road” concept, but now focusing our efforts on wall surfaces.
Another key development is our collaboration with social partners who are joining us to contribute creativity and resources to rural revitalization. For instance, we’re working with iLuvVivid on this project.
This represents an important experiment for us – exploring how to effectively mobilize social resources and encourage broader participation in rural revitalization efforts moving forward.
Andrea:
iLuvVivid aims to enhance design projects through color innovation.
The art college provided us with their color selections and data, which we then analyzed through our backend systems using our proprietary methodology.
We recognized how their choices carefully considered the local cultural context and natural environmental colors. To preserve this ecological harmony, we used this data to recommend an appropriate color system and a series of customized color cards.
From our first visit seeing plain white walls throughout the village, to now witnessing its complete colorful transformation – we’re truly delighted and honored to contribute to the village’s revitalization and to collaborate with Dean Huang on this meaningful initiative.
Ms. Chen:
The difference between before and now is remarkable.
That north wall we used to walk past every day –
just a plain, gray, barren surface.
Now when you pass by,
it catches your eye –
like a whole new scenic view.
We always hope for continuous improvement,
to make it even better than it is today.
Professor Huang:
In the future, we plan to develop the surrounding areas into recreational and tourism zones, essentially creating a “back garden” for the village.
Ms. Guo:
Through two years of hands-on research in rural design, I’ve learned it should promote harmonious coexistence between people and land. We must work with nature, adapting to local conditions, while designers need the wisdom to understand people, objects, and everyday life.
